History
Cristofori designed the keyboard instruments for
prince Ferdinand d’ Medici of Florence during the 18th century.
The harpsichord and the clavichord were like keyboards at that time,
but by plucking the strings to produce sounds.
A disadvantage of the harpsichord was that
the volume could not be controlled, hence people were unable to evoke emotions.
The clavichord was more advanced although it still plucked at wire strings,
but the strings can continue vibrating as long as the key was depressed,
allowing artists to control the volume of their instrument.
Johann Sebastian Bach wrote many popular works
in his Anna Magadelena Notebook now used for the piano.
The clavichord was far from perfect, as it was too delicate in tone
and hence is frequently drowned out by other instruments.
